Stuck at Home Skill #1: Shading (Value & Contrast)
Vocabulary | Tips and Tricks |
Shading is the process of adding value to create the illusion of form, space, and most importantly - light in a drawing. Value is the lightness or darkness of a color. Contrast refers to the arrangement of opposite elements and effects. For example, light and dark colors, smooth and rough textures, large and small shapes. Contrast can be used to create variety, visual interest, and drama in an artwork.Value is experimenting with line, layers, and materials to create contrast. | Texture (even and smooth values)

Set a goal: Decide on one of the skills above to improve on.
I always ask my students:
- How can you tell by looking if the pencil isn't sharp?
- How can you tell this isn't shaded one way (direction)?
- What happens to the paper if you press hard vs. lightly and build up the layers?
These videos also gives a great over view on value and different techniques.
